MTDwebMTDweb is a custom intranet application designed exclusively for Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District. It is an ASP.NET application with a SQL Server 2000 backend. Rich UI was achieved throughout by implementing ASP.NET AJAX and the AJAX Control Toolkit. Security & authentication is performed through the .NET Active Directory (AD) provider. To reduce user input, the AD tree is parsed every night and imported as departments (Organizational Units) and employees (Users). Data throughout the site is associated through user IDs within the database but password management occurs within Active Directory. To save Microsoft Exchange licensing fees, a database-based email system was introduced. This also allowed additional features, such as fine-grained statistics and required reading. This extended messaging system also includes AJAX-enabled auto-complete, address book, sent items, archived items, and drafts. Since all drivers at MTD are required to wear a specific selection of apparel, a shopping cart system was implemented to fulfill orders. To "pay" for the orders, employees draw from both a uniform allowance and/or payroll deduction. Based upon remaining balances and business processes for determining amount owed by the end user, MTDweb will automatically calculate the amount due and present users with the appropriate forms to fill out. Additional features such as employee directory, paper-reduction forms, page-level security, bulletins (announcements), calendar, reroutes, and CMS for the public website were developed.
